“John Hume never lost hope” – Taoiseach


The family of John Hume are asking people to light a candle this evening, instead of lining the streets to pay their respects.
They’re concerned a public gathering for the 83 year old’s funeral may put people at risk of contracting Covid-19.
The former Nobel Peace Prize winner will be removed from his home in Moville to Saint Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry this evening.
His funeral will be live streamed as it takes place from 11.30 tomorrow morning.
On the Nine til Noon Show this morning, Taoiseach Michael Martin told Greg Hughes that at a time when things looked bleak, John Hume never gave up………..

Former Derry Journal Editor Pat McArt says John Hume would not have regarded himself as a nationalist, but as a champion of equality and civil rights.
He says as the son of a casual docker, John Hume didn’t have an easy childhood, and that influenced his thinking…………..
