Donegal to the fore as ROI Schools U18’s lose to England

Carndonagh Community School trio Lee McLaughlin, Corey McBride and Jack Doherty along with St. Eunan’s College student Daragh Elison were all involved with the Republic of Ireland Schools soccer team, who lost to England 2-0 in the SAFIB Centenary Shield in Dalymount Park on Friday night.
The quartet made a strong impact for the home side, in a game where two second half goals proved costly.
McBride and Galway’s Dónal Higgins caused huge damage upfront in an opening half, where Ireland created most of the goal chances, but were unable to make them count.
The introduction of Doherty, who scored Carndonagh C.S.’s lone goal in their Dr. Tony O’Neill Senior National Cup final win; added greatly to the hosts charge, for the closing 15 minutes.
Doherty was eager for goal in the closing stages, but the visitors defence remained solid, in a keenly contested game of football where the hosts will be disappointed not to have at least got a share of the spoils.
They now face must win games against Northern Ireland (QUB, Belfast, 6pm on Thursday April 18th) and Wales (Home Farm FC, Dublin, 7pm on Thursday April 25th) if they are to be in with a chance of taking silverware.
After the loss to England, Cóilín Duffy spoke to Republic of Ireland Head Coach William O’Connor…

Cóilín also caught up with Corey McBride who put in a strong performance on the night…
