Britain’s Prince Harry has said he and his wife Meghan are “so pleased” to be in Ireland on their first official overseas trip as a married couple, saying the country holds a “special place” in the hearts of his family.
Harry gave his first address of their trip, which began on Tuesday evening as the newlyweds arrived in Dublin airport, at a garden party in the British Ambassador to Ireland’s residence in Glencairn.
“Standing here with you on this beautiful evening, it is easy to see why Ireland has such a special place in the hearts of my family and indeed, all those who come here,” Harry told the party, which included guests from across Ireland’s arts, sports, military and social enterprise sectors.
“We’re so pleased to be here, for our first official international visit together as a married couple, and we hope it will be the first of many.”
Brian O’Driscoll and Amy Huberman, who attended Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in 2011, were among the guests at the garden party.

2fm DJ Louise McSharry provided the musical entertainment at the event.
“It is very exciting,” McSharry told RTÉ Entertainment ahead of the royal couple’s arrival. “I was impressed by my own ability to keep a secret”
McSharry added that she would be playing “contemporary Irish music, similar to what I play on my show.”

On Wednesday Harry and Meghan’s itinerary will include a meeting with President Michael D. Higgins, a visit to the Book of Kells in Trinity College, a celebration of Gaelic sports in Croke Park and a moment of reflection at the Famine Memorial at Custom House Quay and EPIC – the Irish Emigration Museum.
Also included on their busy 24-hour schedule is a trip to DogPatch labs, a co-working space for technology start-ups where they will meet children and young people taking part in free coding workshops, and will also have the opportunity to talk to female tech entrepreneurs.
