Over €288,000 for language assistants in Donegal Gaeltacht schools

A total of 34 Donegal Gaeltacht schools are to share a funding allocation of €288,000.
The allocation is part of €784,442 for Muintearas Teo. and Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne to enable them to run the Language Assistants Scheme on behalf of the Department for the 2017/2018 school year.
In a statement, Government Chief Whip Minister Joe McHugh said that the help provided by the language assistants, employed under the scheme, assists with the efforts of participating Gaeltacht schools to ensure that the Irish language continues to thrive through to the next generation in the Gaeltacht.
All 34 schools taking part are spread right across Donegal including Ardara, Glencolmcille, Arranmore, Gaoth Dobhair and Na Dúnaibh.
In line with the recommendations contained in the Policy for Gaeltacht Education 2017-2022, Minister McHugh has also requested his officials to undertake a review of this scheme over the coming months with a view to increasing its impact on the language in the years ahead.
This allocation is being provided under the Language Assistants Scheme as part of the implementation of the 20-Year Strategy for the Irish Language as it relates to the Gaeltacht.
