Gardai are warning businesses to ensure they have strict protocols in place governing the electronic transfer of money after Meath County Council was targetted in a cyber attack which led to over €4 million being transferred to a bank in Hong Kong.
The council is now taking legal action to get that money back.
Two companies in Donegal have been targetted in a similar manner, one successfully.
The scam involves thieves sending what appear to be internal e-mails from a CEO to a senior figure in accounts asking them to transfer money to an account in a manner that appears genuine.
