In truth, the visitors didn’t deserve to lose this game. They were the better side over the 90 minutes and created countless good chances.
However, they fell behind on 39 minutes when Doherty broke the deadlock, racing on to a ball over the top to finish.
Donegal drew level on 73 when the excellent James Melly’s free kick took a slight deflection off Ciaran McGeady and went in past Inishowen keeper Kevin McLaughlin.
But Doherty popped up with the winner on 87 minutes, finishing off a sublime move to give the home side the win, and in the process, all but end the Donegal League’s chances of progressing from the group.
