A scoreless draw was the outcome at the Brandywell on Friday night when Derry City and Galway United fought out a tough battle to share the points.
Patrick Mc Clean lost the ball on the edge of the box in the 21st minute and he let Conor Melody feed a neat pass to Vinny Faherty who never tested the Derry keeper with a strong shot.
McClean turned provider four minutes later when he laid a pass into the path of Ronan Curtis who hit a daisycutter of a shot which the Galway keeper palmed away.
The second half was a much faster period of play and both sides upped their game.
Enda Curran hit a stinging drive which the Derry keeper did well to parry, two minutes after the break.
Steven Folan lost possession of the ball on the edge of the Galway box and it gifted the ball to Derry but Aaron McEneff couldn’t make an effort on goal from it.
Patrick Mc Clean sent a fine cross into the Galway box in the 53rd minute and Rory Patterson narrowly failed to connect with the ball inside the six yard box.
Lukas Schubert missed a clear cut chance to score three minutes later. Folan again lost his footing and the Austrian should have scored from ten yards.
Sixteen minutes from time, Patterson hit the post when he connected with a pass from substitute Ben Doherty.
McCormack, Jarvis and Boyle had efforts in the closing stages for Derry City but the Galway United goal remained intact.
