Condemnation at security alert & disturbances which arose from controversial bonfire in Derry

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has condemned the disturbances and security alert, which arose from a bonfire in the Bogside area of Derry last night.

Several families had to be evacuated from their homes due to a security alert on Charlotte Street after the fire was lit on the Lecky Road.

Mr Mc Cartney claims the situation was dictated by a tiny group of young people who are being exploited by more sinister elements.

That's a point echoed by SDLP Cllr John Boyle, who says consultations were carried out in the Bogside which showed that 85% of the community living there do not want bonfires.
