Ireland’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after damaging his knee during last nights 2-all draw at home to Slovakia.
It’s thought the Newcastle United keeper suffered a cruciate injury which could mean a nine month lay off.
And the knock on effect is that the door could now be open for Shay Given to earn a place in the squad for the Euros.
Given had moved up the pecking order at his club Stoke City this week following an injury to his club mate Jack Butland while he was on international duty with England.
The Lifford man was in Dublin for last night’s game and said he now hopes to play for Stoke City this weekend against Swansea.
He had himself suffered a knee injury last October and his chances of going to the Euros were fading because of a lack of game time. But suddenly, that could all be about to change
