Government not living up to promises on Post Offices – Pringle

The government is being accused of paying lip service to the post office network, while simultaneously urging job seekers to use banks and other financial institutions.
Deputy Pringle claims the government is adopting a two faced approach, saying he’s been told by the Irish Postmasters’ Union that jobseekers who are being paid their social welfare via cheque are being asked to switch to a process of Electronic Fund Transfer.
This, he says, bypasses two Working Groups already in place, at which these issues were to have been discussed.
Deputy Pringle says while social welfare recipients are entitled to choice, a Government Department should not actively seek or encourage the transfer of Post Office business to commercial banks…….
