Ireland’s u19 cricketers finished their World Cup campaign on a high note this week after beating traditional rivals Scotland by 95 runs in their 13th/14th play-off decider in Bangladesh.
Donemana’s William McClintock was the player of the match hitting 69 runs while his brother Gary notched up 27 runs.
Half centuries from and Lorca Tucker (59) saw Ireland post 235 for 7 from their 50 overs despite the best efforts of Mohammad Ghaffar (3-49).
Rush opener Stephen Doheny (45) and Donemana’s Gary McClintock (27) had given the Irish a solid base taking the score to 118 for 4, but it was the defining fifth wicket stand between Man of the Match McClintock and Tucker which took the game away from their celtic cousins.
McClintock clubbed four sixes and hit 5 fours in a top score of 69 from just 45 balls, sharing a stand of 107 with Tucker – their second century partnership of the competition.
Pembroke keeper-batsman Tucker proved the perfect foil for McClintock’s pyrotechnics – his 59 coming from 72 deliveries contained just two boundaries. It was his third half century fo the competition and took his run tally to 222 – placing him in 8th position in the overall tournament run charts.
Scotland’s run chase got off to a steady start, but Rory Anders (2-24) got the breakthrough dismissing Scotland captain Neil Flack (19). Anders’ two wickets saw him go to the top of the leading wicket takers in the competition (13), later being joined by England’s Saqib Mahmood.
Ireland’s young spinners then came to the fore as 16 year-old Harry Tector (4-28) and Fiachra Tucker (3-29) tore through the Scottish innings. Six of the Scots top orders reached double figures, but with none making more than 19, they were always struggling as the Irish attack never relinquished their grip on the game. Scotland were eventually dismissed for 140, losing by an emphatic 95 runs.
Ireland Head Coach Ryan Eagleson was delighted to end the tournament with a victory.
“It’s a great way to end the tournament with a win over rivals Scotland in such a convincing fashion.
“The match winning partnership between Lorcan Tucker and William McClintock of 107 was the deciding factor and was backed up by a very good team bowling performance.
“I have to give special praise to spinners Fiachra Tucker and Harry Tector who took seven wickets between them.”
