EPA says sewerage defecits in Donegal are a “legacy issue”

epa report 2015
The Tánaiste says this morning’s EPA report on Waste Water could be very damaging for the country if not dealt with.
Joan Burton says that Ireland wants a clean, green image internationally.
The Environmental Protection Agency report shows untreated sewerage is being discharged into lakes, rivers and coastal areas in 45 locations around the country, 11 of them in Donegal.
The 11 areas which had either preliminary treatment only or no treatment at all in Donegal last year were
Bundoran, Burtonport, Coolatee, Falcarragh, Kerrykeel, Kilcar, Killybegs, Moville, Ramelton Rathmullan and St Johnston.
The EPA says half of the discharges nationally are taking place in three counties ; Cork, Donegal and Galway.
On today’s Shaun Doherty Show, EPA inspector Dave Shannon said Irish Water must address these issues……….

Dave Shannon acknowledges that part of the problem in Donegal relates to funding, and says the county has not always received its fair share of the monies allocated to sewerage systems……..

Irish Water says its pumping 2 billion euro into fixing the problems. Tánaiste Joan Burton says addressing this legacy is critical to Ireland’s future……..
