It has been announced that Jim McGuinness memoir, Until Victory Always, has been shortlisted for the Irish Sports Book of the Year award at the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards which will be held in the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in Dublin on Wednesday, 25th November. The shortlist puts him up against Tomás Ó Sé, Henry Sheflin, Peter Stringer and Packie Bonner, all of whom have sports memoirs out this year. The public can vote for their sports book of the year at www.irishbookawards.ie/vote2015/
The Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards have been running for ten years and bring together the entire literary community – readers, authors, booksellers, publishers and librarians – to recognise and celebrate the very best of Irish literary talent each year. The Awards dinner has become the major event in the literary calendar with some of Ireland’s, and indeed the world’s, most recognised authors gathering together in a spirit of camaraderie and friendly competition to celebrate the success of the past year.
Other authors nominated in different categories, whom Jim will be rubbing shoulders with on the night of the awards, include Neven Maguire in the cookbook category, Anne Enright, Cecelia Ahern, and Edna O’Brien in the fiction categories, John Banville in the crime book of the year category, under his pen name Benjamin Black, and Joe Duffy and Matt Cooper in the non-fiction books of the year category.
Until Victory Always was published last week with a packed weekend of promotional activity for Jim, including an emotional interview on The Late Late Show which got the whole country talking, a packed book launch at The Highlands Hotel in Gelnties and two mobbed booked signings in Donegal and Letterkenny, attended by over 1,000 people.
Destined to become a classic, Until Victory Always is McGuinness’s unforgettable and highly personal account of his years at the helm of the Donegal team. Confessional, moving, funny and fiercely honest, it’s at once the epic story of one team’s audacious bid to rewrite its destiny and one man’s moving testament to the power of sport to sustain us in our darkest moments.
Until Victory Always: A Memoir by Jim McGuinness is in bookshops now, priced at €24.99.
