Health Minister Leo Varadkar has denied that the centralisation of cancer referrals to Galway University Hospital represents a scaling down of cancer services at Letterkenny General Hospital.
Minister Varadkar was speaking ahead of a meeting with Donegal Action for Cancer Care and Cooperating for Cancer Care North West, which is currently underway.
He told Highland Radio News that centralisation has become policy across all the hospital groups, and is not a unique feature within the Saolta Hospital Group.
He said if the system is found not to be working, it will be changed………..

While at the hospital, Minister Varadkar also opened new catering and dining facilities and a new pulmonary laboratory, both of which were developed after the 2013 flood which devastated the hospital.
The minister was met at the hospital gates by protestors, some of whom entered the hospital unfurled banners as he opened the new catering unit. However, the protest was peaceful, and proceedings were not disrupted.
