24-year-old man appears in Derry Magistrates Court charged with Paul McCauley murder

MCCAULEYA 24-year-old man has appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court charged with the murder of civil servant Paul McCauley.
Piper John McClement (formerly known as Daryll Procter) of 136 The Fountain was charged with the murder of Paul McCauley on June 6 2015.
That was the date Mr. McCauley died after being in a vegetative state following a sectarian attack in 2006.
The court heard police objections to bail were based on fears McClements could interfere in the ongoing investigation and also on the threat faced by the defendant.
A defence solicitor said it was the first time someone who had served a prison sentence for assault had then faced a murder charge over the same incident.
Deputy District Judge John Meehan said he would release the defendant on similar bail terms that were imposed when he had faced the earlier charge.
McClements was released on his own bail of £500 and one surety of £600. He will appear again on August 13.
