The PSNI are appealing for information about a murder which happened in Benburb Co. Tyrone almost 41 years ago.
27 year old John Pat Cunningham was shot by members of a British Army Patrol on Saturday, June the 15th 1974.
The case has been re-opened and a murder investigation has been started, following an assessment of the available evidence.
Detectives from the Legacy Investigation Branch say they’ll engage with the community to try and get to the truth of what happened, so that justice can be served.
However, Mr Cunningham’s family are criticising the decision to launch new murder investigation.
In a statement issued through the Pat Finucane Centre, they express concern that if the PSNI opens a reinvestigation now, it will rule out a new, independent inquiry under the proposed Historical Investigations Unit proposed in the Stormont House Agreement.
They say they do not have confidence in the PSNI’s Legacy Investigation Branch.
