The Republican party has stormed to victory in U.S. midterm elections, beating the Democrats to clinch control of both houses of Congress.

The results mean Barack Obama will struggle to pass any reforms in the final stretch of his presidency.

Brendan Boyle, son of Donegal and Sligo parents won his congress seat in Philadelphia.

He becomes the only congressman with an Irish-born parent.
