Harkin to bring hill farmers to Europe if row over new commonage rules is not resolved

Marian Harkin

Independent MEP Marian Harkin is organising a meeting in Brussels on the issue of new rules being imposed by the Department of Agriculture on the owners of commonage land in Donegal and other hill areas.

Speaking following a meeting attended by around 1,000 hill farmers in Letterkenny at the weekend, the Midlands North West Independent MEP repeated her view that the new rules are unworkable and realistic. They include the exclusion commanage farmers from the new GLAS scheme if a certain percentage haven't signed a maintenaince agreement.

Ms Harkin says these rules are being imposed by the govenrment here rather than by the commission itself, and a new way of meeting Europe's rerquirements must be found..........
