Battle for final seat in Inishowen to go to the wire

vote-counting-001It looks like the final seat in Inishowen is to go to the wire in Buncrana today.
Counting is underway in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, and the first count is expected at around 3pm.
According to the tallies Fianna Fails Martin McDermott from Glengad has easily topped the poll. Sinn Feins Jack Murray and Albert Doherty are then in third.
They are then closely followed by Fianna Fails Paul Canning and Independent Nicholas Crossan. Fianna Fails Rena Donaghey and Labours Martin Farren should also be safe.
Meanwhile the real battle is for the final seat between Sinn Feins Ciaran McLaughlin and Fine Gael John Ryan, who is looking to retain his seat on the Council.
Yesterdays final tally has McLaughlin on 952 and Ryan on 874. But we have been made aware that Box 12 from Burnfoot Youth Centre was tallied wrong.
Box 12 had John Ryan tallied 0 votes for this area, even though Burnfoot is were he is from. Also, taking into consideration that in the 2009 local election, John Ryan picked up 88 votes from the same box.
So it can be expected that he will pick a significant number of votes from Box 12, which would bring him even closer to Ciaran McLaughlin.
Meaning it’s likely that the battle for that final seat in Inishowen could go in to the early hours of the morning.
