A Sinn Fein Deputy has raised the continued imprisonment of Donegal Republican John Downey in Belmarsh Prison, with the Tánaiste.
61-year-old, John Downey, from Ards was arrested in May charged with murdering four soldiers in the 1982 Hyde Park IRA bomb blast. He was arrested despite receiving assurances from the Northern Ireland Office that he was free to travel around the UK without fear of arrest.
He is set to go on trial in November.
Dublin South West Deputy Sean Crowe called on Eamon Gilmore to raise the issue with the British Government and request John’s immediate release…….
The Tanaiste said that the case of John Downey does raise many questions for other republicans in similar positions.
And Eamon Gilmore said he will be seeking answers from the British Government:
