61-year-old, John Downey, from Ards was arrested in May charged with murdering four soldiers in the 1982 Hyde Park IRA bomb blast. He was arrested despite receiving assurances from the Northern Ireland Office that he was free to travel around the UK without fear of arrest.
He is set to go on trial in November.
Dublin South West Deputy Sean Crowe called on Eamon Gilmore to raise the issue with the British Government and request John's immediate release.......
The Tanaiste said that the case of John Downey does raise many questions for other republicans in similar positions.
