Senator O’Domhnaill calls on Government to decriminalise local fishermen who commit minor breaches of rules

Fianna Fail Senator Brian O'Domhnaill is calling on government deputies to support a bill he is introducing to decriminalise local fishermen who commit minor breaches of the rules.

Senator O'Domhnaill is to hold meetings in Dunkineely, Dore and Downings over the weekend to consult with local fishermen before he moves the bill, which will be published tomorrow.

While large Foreign Vessels who overfish in Irish waters will continue to be subject to criminal sanctions, his bill would see criminal sanctions being replaced with administrative penalties for local fishing vessels.

Senator O'Domhnaill says a similar bill was promised by Fine Gael in the past, and they should support his............
