Halappanavar infection undiagnosed for 3 days – draft report

The infection that contributed to the death of Savita Halappanavar went undiagnosed for 3 days at Galway University Hospital according to a draft report into her death.

The report shows that staff at the hospital should have considered a termination for Savita days before her death.

Possible infection day Savita was admitted

The report – extracts of which have been seen by the Evening Herald – also shows a lack of clarity among key staff about who was responsible for acting on blood tests.

They showed a possible infection on the day Savita was admitted to hospital.

The Health Minister says he has not yet received the report and will not comment because he says there may be legal challenges.

Minister Reilly says he expects the report will be finally completed within the next 10 days.

The Taoiseach says the husband of Savita Halappanavar should have been the first to be briefed about the report of the investigation into her death.

Enda Kenny told the Dáil the report should not have been leaked in this way.
