Trial into Ireland’s worst ever road accident to last over three weeks

Letterkenny Circuit Court was told today that the trial of a man charged with dangerous driving causing Ireland’s worst ever car accident is likely to run for over three weeks.
24-year-old Shaun Kelly of Ballymagan, Buncrana faces the charges arising out of a crash between Clonmany and Buncrana in Inishowen, Co Donegal in July 2010 in which eight people died.

Judge John O’Hagan adjourned the case until next term in January 2013.
He also granted a defence application to have experts examine the cars involved in the crash and remove parts if necessary for laboratory analysis subject to the state having no objection.
The men who died in the two-vehicle crash were 66-year-old Hugh Friel, 21-year-old Mark McLaughlin, PJ McLaughlin and Damien McLaughlin 19-year-old Paul Doherty and Ciarán Sweeney, 23-year-old James McEleney and 22-year-old Eamon McDaid.
