Pat the Cope welcomes over-fishing breakthrough

The European Parliament has backed proposed legislation to impose sanctions on countries engaged in unsustainable fishing practices.
The report, prepared by North West MEP Pat The Cope Gallagher was approved by 659 votes to 7, a margin he says is unprecedented in the area of fishing policy.
In the immediate term, the sanctions will be considered in the ongoing row with Iceland and the Faroes over mackerel fishing.
