Derry couple in court on child cruelty charges

A 22-year-old mother and her 24-year-old partner, have appeared at Derry Magistrates Court jointly charged with cruelty against her baby daughter.
The pair are charged with causing cruelty to the one-year-old baby in August 2010.
The couple, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the baby, are also charged with perverting the course of justice by providing false information about her injuries.
Solicitors for the two defendants said the medical evidence in the case was complex and that they would be engaging medical experts of an equal standing to those expected to be called by the prosecution.
The solicitors also accepted that at first appearance, their clients had a case to answer.
The mother was released on her own bail of £500, while her partner was remanded in custody.
