Sinn Fein fails in efforts to have household charge srapped

Sinn Fein’s Private Members Motion – calling on the Government to scrap the household charge – was last night defeated in the Dáil.
The Bill was rejected by 76 votes to 48.
42 per cent of homeowners have yet to pay the 100 euro charge, which was introduced at the start of this year, to fund local authority services.
But Sinn Fein says there are other ways to generate this money – such as placing a cap on public sector pay – or introducing a 1 per cent wealth tax.
