Harkin calls for special measures to address drop in Donegal farmer payments

North West MEP Marian Harkin says special measures must be taken to address discrepancies between payments to farmers in Donegal compared to other areas of the country.
Figures published by the Department of Agriculture show that since 2008, payments per farmer in Donegal has reduced by an average of €1,186 resulting in a total loss of €10.8 million to the county in that period.
The figures show the average payment to farmers in Kilkenny was €21,373, while in Donegal, it was €9,847.
She says the case for special measures for the more disadvantaged areas is very strong.
