Police in Derry warn of upsurge in home and car thefts

Police in Derry are urging the community to keep their homes safe following a number of thefts
Police are urging people to make sure their car doors and windows are locked at all times, especially at night.
As well as home security, the police are advising the public to lock up sheds and garages and don’t leave bikes or tools outside and to check windows and doors and make sure they are locked at night or if you are away from home.
Chief Inspector Eaton said that neighbours can also help keep your house safer urging them to look out for each other.
He says local knowledge is key and if you see someone acting suspiciously note down any important details such as a description or a car registration and contact police.
The Chief Inspector says the police will follow up on calls and in turn they could prevent a crime.
