Woman jailed for hairspray attack on police

A Derry woman with almost 40 convictions in the last two years has been jailed for two months for throwing a tin of hairspray at a police officer.
31-year-old Edel McLaughlin, of Bishop Street, admitted disorderly behaviour.
The court heard a police patrol in the Diamond area of Derry city centre on Christmas Eve was approached by a “highly intoxicated” McLaughlin.
She produced a tin of hairspray but then wandered off before returning and throwing the tin at an officer.
The court was told that McLaughlin was on bail and was not allowed to enter licensed premises.
She was arrested and a breath sample revealed her to be almost four times the legal limit.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said his client was known to the court and had been doing well but at Christmas she took a drink with “unfortunate consequences”.
He said she spent Christmas Day in Strand Road PSNI station.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that McLaughlin had to do something about her drinking and jailed her for two months.
