1991 RUC probe into Buchanan and Howell deaths was flawed – Ombudsman

A botched police investigation made it possible for two people to get away with a double murder for 20 years - by pretending it was suicide.

Trevor Buchanan and Lesley Howell were found dead in a car in Castlerock, Co Derry in 1991.

Their partners Hazel Stewart and Colin Howell killed them - with officers only establishing what happened when Howell confessed.
