Derry teen to be tried for 2008 Shiels murder

A teenager is to stand trial for the murder of pizza delivery man Emmet Shiels in Derry
Thaddeus McAllister, who is originally from Cable Street but now resides at an address in London, is charged with the murder of Mr Shiels on June 24, 2008.
The 19-year-old faces further charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm and common assault on the same date.
At a hearing in Derry Magistrates Court yesterday McAllister declined to call any evidence in answer to the charges.
However, defence barrister Ivor McAteer told the court a prima facie case was not conceded.
In a submission to the court, Mr McAteer said the evidence relied on by the Crown was “ridiculously weak.”
Returning McAllister for trial at Belfast Crown Court, District Judge Des Perry said he was “satisfied there is a case to answer.”
The teen was released on continuing bail and will appear at Belfast Crown Court on a date to be fixed.
