Boxing – Quigley misses out on Irish selection

Finn Valley fighter Jason Quigley who is currently training in Italy with the Irish Elite squad has missed out on selection for next months World Championships in Azerbaijan.  At the National Stadium in Dublin recently Quigley beat Twin Towns Stephen O’Reilly in the Middleweight final at an open unseeded tournament. It was speculated that the winners at each weight would be included on the team for the World’s which also doubles up as an Olympic qualifier. However following a meeting at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday the Boxing Council of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association named their Elite squad which did not include Quigley or Derry man Tyrone Mc Cullagh. Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlon, John Joe Nevin, David Oliver Joyce, Roy Sheehan, Darren O’Neill, Joe Ward, Ken Egan and Con Sheehan were all named on the Irish team for Baku. Ray Moylette, the current European Elite champion, and Ross Hickey, the current Irish Elite champion, will meet in a box-off on Friday September 2nd to decide the light-welterweight position.
