Controversial Letterkenny petrol station finally given the go ahead

An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission for a new Petrol station in Letterkenny which has been the subject of years of controversy.
Tony Kelly has been given the go ahead for the project despite strong objections from near-by business owner Edward Tobin.
Letterkenny Town Council gave conditional permission for the erection of a petrol filling station, two car wash units and parking to Tony Kelly on the loop road locally known as the Paddy Harte Road.
This was objected to, on a number of grounds by, Edward Tobin who owns a filling station on the Port road.
He employed the services of  ‘Trafficwise’ an engineering consultancy company specialising in field of traffic and transport management.
They submitted a detailed report citing grounds as to why planning permission should not be given for the development.
Trafficwise stated that the proposed location of the development was not suitable and could cause a significant traffic hazard and would be a danger to public safety.
They also claimed the plans contravened the Letterkenny and Environs development plan.
Having reviewed all submission and having visited the site – An Bord Pleanala has given the go ahead for the new development subject to conditions which have yet to be publicly published.
