Derrybeg man fined for burning PVC door after house party

A man who was asked to leave a party in Killybegs has admitted at Donegal District Court that he later set fire to a PVC door in the next building.
The 28 year old from Derrybeg was fined, and ordered to pay compensation.
The court was told that former catering student Michael Gibbons, whose girlfriend had a baby five weeks ago, “took offence” when asked to leave a party.
He left and returned with fire accelerant and mistakenly set fire to the door of the next house owned by Patrick Breslin at Merchant House in Killybegs.
Defence solicitor Francis Gillespie told the court that Gibbons had a “stupid idea” to react in the way he did when evicted from the party on December 4, 2009.
He suffered from depression and had ongoing health problems at the time. He realised alcohol exacerbated his problem and was off it since Christmas and hoped to remain off it for the rest of his life.
Gibbons, of Lunniagh, Derrybeg, was ordered to pay €1,000 compensation and was fined €500.
