Electoral Areas at loggerheads over roads funding

Today’s Donegal County Council meeting descended into chaos when electoral areas were pitched against each other over additional road allocations.
Inishowen councillors are furious that money which they believe they are entitled to will end up in Stranorlar.
4.2 million euro was announced by government to carry out additional work on roads – In the past this money was allocated using a mileage system, with the electoral area with the most roads getting the most money.
This worked out favorably for Inishowen. However, a proposal has been made which would see roads worst damaged by frost to get most money.
Off the back of an engineers report it’s proposed that Stranorlar would get 850 thousand, against 567 thousand under the old system. Under the proposals Inishowen would get 920 thousand, 170 thousand less than under the ols system.
Inishowen councillors say they won’t accept this, leading to heating exchanges in the chamber. The meeting was adjourned for lunch to allow the mayor, Cllr Cora Harvey, decide how to deal with the situation.
