Letterkenny Mayor says count entry restrictions were “silly”

Letterkenny Town Councillors are calling for more people to be admitted to election counts. A debate last night heard that several people were denied entry to the Aura Leisure Centre because they did not have the correct passes.

The list of people denied entry included, at various points, a candidate, a candidate's parents and the Mayor of Letterkenny Cllr Tadhg Culbert .

Meanwhile, the inevitable post election debate on the electoral register is getting underway.

Letterkenny Town Council is to contact the Department of the Environment to see if a pilot programme can be implemented locally to have the register transferred to a PDF file and made available to people over the internet.

The issue was raised by Cllr Jimmy Harte, who contested the General Election. He says the responsibility to check the register lies with the individual, but the council must strive to make it easier to do so..........
