Post mortem this morning on remains of woman killed in house fire

A post mortem is due to take place this morning on the remains of 80-year-old Nellie Rodgers who died tragically in a fire at her west Donegal home on Saturday morning.

The late Ms Rodgers lived at Kerrytown outside Burtonport with her 83-year-old brother Dan, who managed to escape the blaze.

83-year-old Dan Rodgers is currently being treated at Letterkenny General Hospital for the effects on smoke inhalation.

The fire was discovered by neighbours at around 930am on Saturday morning, but by that stage the small cottage had already been engulfed by flames.

Attempts were made to rescue the brother and sister. Mr Rodgers was sucessfully removed from the burning house, but tragically the rescuers were unable to remove Ms Rodgers.

The small cottage was left totally gutted by the blaze.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination and Garda investigations are continuing in conjunction with the fire service.
