Medical 2 closed to visitors at Letterkenny General Hospital

The increase in people presenting to Letterkenny General Hospital is continuing to effect services today with a number of clinics cancelled.
Last evening the hospital said a surge in people presenting with flu like illness as well as staff shortages due to sickness and recruitment issues were the cause of the delays.
Restrictions have been imposed, and the hospital is appealing for cooperation.
The HSE statement reads as follows –
Due to a surge in demand for in-patient beds, Renal & Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Out-Patient clinics at Letterkenny General Hospital are cancelled tomorrow morning, January 6, 2010.  Patients are being contacted by the hospital directly and will have their appointment rescheduled at the earliest opportunity.
Medical 2 Ward Closed to Visitors
Medical 2 Ward at LGH is closed to visitors for infection prevention and control purposes.
Visiting Restrictions and Advice
• Visitors are asked not to visit the hospital unless it is absolutely essential and, where it is essential, visitor numbers should be kept to a minimum and be confined to visiting times only – visitors are asked to co-operate with staff in all matters in this regard;
• Visitors who themselves may be unwell or have any flu symptoms should not visit the hospital. Very young children or those with some other serious illness should avoid visiting the hospital, as they may be particularly susceptible to the virus; and
• Visitors are asked to wash their hands thoroughly before entering or leaving the inpatient area.
Management at Letterkenny General Hospital regret any inconvenience caused and thank people for their cooperation.
