Council defers burial of whales in face of local concerns

Plans to bury up to 35 dead whales on the beach ast Rutland Island have been postponed after local people expressed concerns.
The massive pod of Long-Finned Pilot Whales was found last weekend. It is still unclear how the whales, who had been swimming in the area for days, had died.
After securing a licence, Donegal County Council had planned to bury the dead creatures on the beach after they began to decompose.
Specialist digging equipment was transported to Burtonport Harbour at 9.30 this morning, but the operation was halted amid concerns that burying the creatures may pose a future health risk. A final decision has been postponed, pending further discussions.
Local Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher says the main issue was the lack of information from the council………..
