Eight people have been killed in a two car collision in Inishowen.
The two car collision happened at Glasmullen, on the Buncrana to Clonmany road, at around twenty to eleven last night.
Gardai say seven occupants of a black Volkswagen Passat along with the driver of a second car a red Toyota Corolla were killed in the crash. The driver of the Passat was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital with serious injuries.
The eight occupants of the Passat ranged in ages from their late teens to their early twenties. The driver of the Corolla was a man in his 60s.
None of those who lost their lives have yet been named, but we understand the dead were from Clonmany, Buncrana and Fahan.
Gardai are investigating reports of the black Passat having been involved in an earlier separate collision, some minutes prior to the fatal collision.
The road has been closed off for a technical examination, and is expected to remain closed all day.
As Inishowen struggles to come to terms with the enormity of the tragedy, Senator Cecilia Keavney says everyone in Inishowen will be traumatised by what's happened..........
Cllr Padraig Mac Lochlainn is Mayor of Buncrana and Deputy Mayor of Donegal.
He says while the primary focus today will rightly be on the bereaved families, people should also remember what the emergency services go through.
He says after speaking to gardai, ambulance and fire service personnel last night, it was clear they were in total shock........
Gardai are appealing for anyone who was in the area or who was traveling on the Buncrana to Clonmany road between 10 and 11 o'clock last night to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 9320540.
They are particularly anxious to hear from anyone who may have seen the black VW Passat before the incident
