70 year-old appears in court on child sex charges

A 70-year-old man has been returned for trial to Derry Crown Court charged with sexually grooming a child, gross indecency against a child and making indecent images of children.
William John Roddy of Queen Street in the city appeared at a preliminary enquiry today to face eight charges that were said to have occurred on dates between January 1999 and January 16 2009.
It was accepted that there was a case to answer and when asked if he wished to call witnesses or make any statement Roddy replied ‘not at this time.’
He was released on continuing bail on condition that he have no contact with anyone under 18, that he does not have anyone under that age in his home and that he does not be in possession of photographic equipment.
Roddy will appear at the Crown Court on January 12.
