Road death sentence “a joke” – Victim’s mother

The mother of a teenager killed in an accident outside Derry last year has described the sentence handed to the driver of the car as a “joke”.
26 year old Martin Anthony Paul McGonagle from Sandbank Park in the city, was jailed for two years for causing the death of Ciaran Doherty by dangerous driving.
He admitted taking cannabis and drinking beer before the accident.
The court heard that Ciaran Doherty was one of several people who had accepted a lift from Mr McGonagle early on the morning of June 1st, 2008.
After approximately half a mile McGonagle lost control of the car on a bend and crashed, rolling over several times.
Mr Doherty collapsed at the scene and died of his injuries a week later.
