Fire destroys historic Donaghmore house in Castlefin

An investigation is underway after an overnight fire destroyed one of Donegals most historic buildings.
A number of fire appliances attended the scene at Donaghmore house in Castlefin last night and eventually brought the blaze under control however it’s understood that the building is completely gutted.
The 10 bedroom Victorian country house is currently on the market for €1.2m
Chief Fire Officer with Donegal County Council Joseph McTaggart has been outlining the extent of damage:

Local Councillor Gary Doherty says what was iconic landmark is now effectively a shell:

The Main House extends to 595 sq m (6,400 sq ft) approx.
Original features include sliding sash window frames, original cornicing, fireplaces and extra high ceilings.
It is believed the Donaghmore House was associated with the Spence family from c.1750 until c.1800 of which at least two members (father and son) served as ministers of the church.
The original house appears to have ceased to have been used as a rectory in the 1860′ s and the present, more substantial house, may have been built shortly after this time.
