19 year old man dies after Derry assault

A 19 year old man has died following an assault in Derry city centre.
Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident on William Street at around 2.15 this morning.
They say the victim was involved in an altercation with another man, but died a short time after arriving in hospital.
Foyle MLA Mark H.Durkan said this morning there is a real sense of sadness and shock across Derry today, Foyle MP Elisha Mc Callion echoed that sentiment. Both are encouraging anyone with information to contact the PSNI.

Police in Derry/ Londonderry are appealing for witnesses to an assault that occurred in William Street at approximately 2am this morning, Sunday 24 September, in which a 19 year old man died. 
Detective Chief Inspector Geoff Boyce of the PSNI Serious Crime Branch said : “Police received a report of an assault around 2.15am and attended the scene alongside the NI Ambulance Service.
“We believe that the victim was in an altercation with another male and was seriously injured during an assault. He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries a short time later.
“Police are aware that many people were socialising in William Street earlier this morning and we would like to hear from members of the public who witnessed an altercation in William Street between approximately 1:45am and 2:15am to get in touch with detectives at Strand Road on telephone number 101, quoting reference number 228 of 24/9/17.
 “Police would particularly like to hear from motorists who were either parked on or travelling along William Street during these times and who had a dash cam fitted to their vehicle.
“Alternatively, information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
