Hurling: Nicky Rackard Cup, Round 2B: Donegal 3-15 v 3-11 Fermanagh
Donegal’s hurlers beat Fermanagh in the Nicky Rackard Cup in a flowing game at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny.
Ardal McDermott’s side lost their opening match to Armagh 2-19 to 3-13 last Saturday and today was their second crack at progressing in the competition.
It didn’t look good in the first half, with Fermanagh opening the scoring and taking a two-point lead before Donegal pulled one back.
It was four points each on 23 minutes, but three goals in 10 minutes saw the game explode.
Fermanagh scored first, Donegal’s Sean McVeigh got one back, and Fermanagh scored again on 33 minutes.
At half-time, it was Donegal 1-06 v 2-05 Fermanagh.
Fermanagh got another goal on 57 minutes through Sean Corrigan and McVeigh got another four minutes later for Donegal.
The high-scoring second half continued and there was plenty of action as both sets of players seemed to up their gears.
Donegal’s Ciaran Mattewson got Donegal’s third goal and put Donegal ahead 3-14 (26) v 3-08 (20).
It was a four-point lead for Donegal as the game entered injury time and Donegal held out for a 3-15 (27) v 3-11 (23) victory.
Fermanagh are not out and face a new match to progress.
After the game, Tom Comack spoke with Donegal manager Ardal McDermott.
