Shay Given has admitted this summer’s European Championships could be his Ireland swansong if he makes the plane to France in June.
The Lifford man, who has 133 Ireland caps to his name, has been out since injuring his knee in the 1-0 victory over Germany last October
Shay is hoping he gets the nod to replace Jakob Haugaard in goal when Stoke return to Premier League action at home to Tottenham next Monday, a move which would boost his chances of bagging a spot on the championship squad.
He said “Everyone wants to be at the Euros and it’s probably the last chance for me personally and I’d love to go out with a bang. “I don’t think I have many tournaments left in me because I’m 40 next week.”
“I haven’t decided to retire after the Euro’s, but I wouldn’t imagine I’ve too many games left for Ireland. I need to play to prove to Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane that I am fit”
