Harley says NRA allocations suggest Twin Towns by-pass delay

Stranorlar Councillor Martin Harley says he believes the Twin Towns by-pass will be delayed for at least another ten years.

Cllr Harley says the fact that a substantial sum of money has been set aside by the NRA for improvements and safety works on the N15 between Barnesmore Gap and Lifford this year, suggesting the by-pass is not on the immediate agenda.

Cllr Harley says following a recent meeting with the NRA, he believed the road would be substantially delayed. Now, he says, the NRA’s allocations announced yesterday suggest the delay will; be even longer……….

 

PSNI recover van full of musical instruments stolen in Donegal

Police in Derry have recovered more than £20,000 worth of musical equipment that had been stolen in Co Donegal.

Among the items recovered was a guitar that had belonged to the late Jim Gilchrist, who was murdered in Derry in September 2005.

The sequence of events began in the early hours of yesterday, when police were contacted by a member of the public about a suspicious van at Victoria Road , Strabane.

Two people were subsequently arrested at Old Strabane Road , Gobnascale.  A 21-year-old man was charged with a number of offences and is to appear at Derry Magistrates Court today.  A 21-year old woman was released pending further enquiries.

In a follow-up search, police recovered the musical equipment in the Clooney area of Derry .

The van and its load of musical equipment had been stolen in Muff.

Police believe that the white Transit Connect van was involved in a number of collisions in the Bready, Newbuildings and Waterside areas and are keen to hear from anyone who saw these incidents.

Soccer – Zayed Signs With Derry

Former Drogheda United and Sporting Fingal star Eamon Zayed has agreed a one year deal with Derry City. The 27 year old has signed on a free contract after being released by Sporting towards the end of last season.  It was Zayed’s performances with Sporting that got him noticed by Libya, because of this he recently won his first cap. Zayed was Drogheda’s top scorer in their championship winning side of 2007 and won an FAI Cup medal with Sporting Fingal in 2009.

DACC Chair to run as Independent Candidate in Donegal NE

Newtoncunningham based Health Campaigner Betty Holmes is to go forward as an Independent General Election Candidate in Donegal North East.

Ms Holmes  is currently Chairperson of Donegal Action for Cancer Care, but says she is contesting the election as an individual candidate and will not be using the DACC name or purporting to represent the organisation.

Ms Holmes says she is going forward to ensure that the health needs of the people of Donegal remain firmly on the agenda, both nationally and locally…………..

 

Councillors McLaughlin and Harte slam NRA road allocations for Donegal

Details have emerged today of the NRA’s road allocations for Donegal this year, with just under €19.5 million set aside for projects in the county.

Donegal North-East Deputy Niall Blaney had claimed earlier today that the Letterkenny relief road would recieve over a million euro for the completion of design work.

But two of his fellow general election candidates in Donegal North East have since slammed these claims.

Sinn Fein councillor Padriag McLaughlin says not one cent has been allocated to the relief road around Letterkenny………..

 

And Labour councillor Jimmy Harte, says Donegal North-East seems to have been left out of the allocations…..

 

Frank McBrearty says Labour didn’t offer Thomas Pringle a senate seat

Frank McBrearty has refuted claims that the Labour Party wants to push him to one side and run Cllr Thomas Pringle on their ticket in Donegal South-West.

Last week Cllr Pringle claimed he had been approached by the Labour Party and asked to run as their candidate in the general election.

The Killybegs based councillor said a senior Labour Party figure had told him that if the general election didnt work out he would be offered a senate seat by Labour in return for joining the party.

But speaking on todays Shaun Doherty Show, Cllr McBrearty says Thomas Pringle was not offered a senate seat…..

 

All-Ireland winning captain Anthony Molloy involved in serious road accident

All-Ireland winning skipper Anthony Molloy has been injured in a road accident today in which another man is battling for his life.

Three people were rushed to hospital following the head-on collision on the N15 between Ballintra and Laghey, near Donegal town, at 10 o’clock this morning.

48-year-old Anthony Molloy,  captain when Donegal won it’s All-Ireland in 1992, was a passenger in a Kia car being driven by another man in the Sligo direction.

They were in collision with a Bulmers van being driven towards Donegal town.

The van driver is from Ballisodare, Co. Sligo, and is fighting for his life in Sligo General Hospital.

A Hospital spokesperson said he was “critical”. The men in the Kia, including Mr Molloy, were said to be stable.

The N15 between Laghey and Ballintra was closed for several hours while gardai examined the crash scene. Traffic was diverted along another road linking the two villages.

The critically-injured man is a 38-year-old father of two girls and a boy.

Senator Cecilla Keaveney set to quit Fianna Fail?

Fianna Fail Senator Cecillia Keaveney has confirmed that she will not be attending a selection convention on Thursday night, which was to chose Fianna Fails Inishowens General Election candidate in Donegal North East.

A meeting of the party in Inishowen last night heard that three people, Cllr Rena Donaghey, Senator Cecilia Keavney and Cllr Charlie Mc Conalogue had been nominated. Cllr Donaghey withdrew her name, sayi8ng she would support whatever decisions were made at convention.

It was then unanimously agreed that Cllr Mc Conalogue and Senator Keavney will contest the convention at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel.

Senator Keaveney said she only recieved an e-mail this morning telling her of Thursdays meeting.

She told Highland Radio news she would not be attending, and she says she doesnt know if her future lies with Fianna Fail after the way she has been treated……

 

Udaras 2010 report shows brunt of job losses in Donegal

The annual report of Udaras na Gaeltachta says a total of 535 new full-time jobs were approved last year, 194 of them in Donegal.

However. when job losses are taken into account, there’s been a net decrease of 398 jobs, with Donegal beraring the brunt of the job losses.

Udaras na Gaeltachta’s annual report for 2010 shows that overall employment in Donegal last year declined by 243 jobs, with the majority of job losses occurring in the Largo Foods group of companies based on the Gaoth Dobhair Business Park.

However, the report says Udaras is encouraged by the significant investment made by Largo Foods group  to target the healthy snack food market, and officials are confident that employment numbers will rise again when this development is implemented.

The report says it is encouraging to see a substantial amount of new jobs in new projects approved in the Donegal Gaeltacht last year. A total of 193 new full time positions were approved in projects which will involve a total investment of €16.7 million when those projects are fully operational. Many of these new jobs will be coming on-stream in 2011 and over the subsequent two years.

VEC urges unemployed people to consider adult education

The VEC in Donegal is urging people to attend its Adult Education Fair in Letterkenny’s Mount Errigal Hotel tomorrow, particularly those who are out of work.

Adult Education Officer Martin Gormley says there are now many people in Donegal who left school without formal qualifications to work, and now fuind themselves unemployed and unskilled.

Martin Gormley says a number of agencies, particularly the Department of Social Protection, are involved in the event…….
