Bishop Daly urges people to shop local as it’s the “christian thing to do”

Bishop Edward Daly has called on people to shop local, saying it was the “christian thing to do” at Christmas.

The Bishop was speaking about the recession yesterday at Highland Radios mass from the Foyle Hospice yesterday.

Businesses in Donegal have suffered in recent years, as people go in search of a bargain across the border.

But Bishop Daly said we should support our local businesses:

 

Donegal a priority for salt – NRA

The NRA says Donegal is one of the six counties which will be prioritised when fresh salt supplies arrive in the country this week.

Speaking after a meeting of the goverment’s emergency taskforce, Sean O’Neill from the National Roads Authority said national supplies of salt were down to 10,000 tonnes, with 2,000 tonnes a day being used.

He said the Authority is now confident that the new shipments at sea would begin arriving into Cork and Belfast around Wednesday.

He said the priority counties now are Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan Roscommon, Kerry and Cork.

City Of Derry Airport open, but some delays possible

The clarify an earlier report City of Derry Airport is open and operational.

However further flight disruption is possible due to poor weather at the destination airports in the UK.

Passengers due to travel today should contact their airlines by telephone or online before travelling to the airport in order to check the current status of their flights.

At the moment all flights for today are expected to operate normally.

North west expected to escape worse of snow showers

More snow is forecast today, although there’s not likely to be as much as in recent days.

It’s expected to fall mainly in Connacht, west Munster and north Leinster, but there could be showers elsewhere too.

Roads are still treacherous across the country.

The weather forcast for Donegal on Sunday

Very cold today but mostly dry and bright with sunny intervals.
Wintry showers near the north coast later.
Highs of only +1 to -3 degrees in a light variably breeze.

Bitterly cold overnight with scattered snow showers in northern coastal regions.
Light winds will allow patches of freezing fog to form.
Lows of -5 to -10 Celsius with widespread sharp to severe frost.

Continuing very cold on Monday with fog slow to clear some spots.
Mostly dry with bright or sunny spells developing.
Temperatures staying well below zero in most parts.

Donegals roads remain treacherous

Roads across Donegal are in a very dangerous condition today, as snow continues to fall in the county.

The Back of Errigal and Carndonagh / Drumfries Roads are closed, with problems also reported on the Lifford Castlefinn Road as well.

Gardai and council officials are urging people to travel only if absolutely necessary.

Also pedestrians are asked to wear the correct footwear and high vis vests.

Senior Roads Engineer with Donegal County Council, Vincent Lynn says conditions on Donegals roads are treacherous.

 

Deputy Mc Hugh fails in bid to have emergency meeting of Dail Transport Committee

Donegal North East Deputy Joe Mc Hugh has failed in a bid to have an emergency meeting of the Dail Transport Committee called for next week.

Deputy Mc Hugh says he called for the meeting to see if a mechanism can be agreed to have salt supplies diverted from elsewhere to Donegal.

Deputy Mc Hugh is now hoping to meet with NRA officials over the weekend to see what can be done to improve the situation locally.

He says if the low salt stocks are as a result of money saving decisions, then that is a false economy…..

 

HSE services affected by weather

HSE West has issued a statement saying that due to adverse weather today and over the coming days, it may not be possible for the HSE to deliver a full range of care services, including services in people’s own homes.

The HSE says Services will be prioritised and those considered essential will be delivered first, for example, to people who require assistance getting in and out of bed.

In cases where it is not possible for HSE staff to make a home visit, the client will be notified by telephone.

In the event of your service being postponed for a period of time, clients are being asked to arrange for a family member, friend or neighbour call in them.

The HSE is also asking the public to visit their vulnerable neighbours, especially older people who may not be able to get out in the current conditions.

Derry man walks into police station with knife twice this week Court hears

Derry Magistrates Court has been told how, on two occasions this week, a 45-year-old Derry man walked into a police station with a knife.

William O’Kane of no fixed abode was charged with possessing a knife on Wednesday, and possessing a knife and making threats to kill on Thursday.

On December 15th,  O’Kane walked into the Waterside police station and handed an officer a knife, telling him he needed help as he was going to hurt someone.

Police took him to hospital and he was later discharged.

Ther fiollowing day, 16 O’Kane walked into Strand Road polie station and handed an officer a knife and told polie that if they let him go he was going to kill a man who he named.

He claimed this man had shown his fiancee a text message O’Kane had sent to another female and his relationship had ended as a result.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court that it was a ‘moment of madness’. He said his client was ‘deeply embarrassed’ about the incidents. He said O’Kane never intended to hurt the other man and was just ‘venting his anger.’

District Judge Mr. Barney MElholm sentenced O’Kane to three months in prison suspended for a period of 18 months and warned him to ‘stay well away’ from the other man.

Further restrictions on Lough Mourne supply

The following is a statement received this evening from Donegal County Council -
Lough Mourne Water Supply Update – 17th December 2010.
Water supplies throughout the Lough Mourne network are under severe strain due to the current weather conditions and

Donegal County Council wish to inform the public that the following reservoirs in the Stranorlar Electoral Area will be turned off on Friday 17th, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th of December from 7.30pm until 8.00am each night to allow these reservoirs build up. This practice will ensure that the majority of consumers will have a water supply for a period during the day.

Supply will also be turned off to the Twin Towns from midnight until 8.00am each night.

High areas throughout the network will possibly experience poor pressure and flow over the weekend.

Donegal County Council wish to appeal to the public to help us to eliminate wastage by checking vacant properties where internal plumbing may be damaged, checking all field connections, turning off leaking drinking troughs and avoid leaving taps running.  Continued vigilence is necessary as the severe weather is forecast to continue.

Donegal County  Water Services staff remain actively engaged in efforts to maintain and restore water supplies to consumers.

Once again the co-operation of everyone is required if we are to avert widespread shortages in water supplies .
