Letterkenny Town Council rethinks traffic strategy around schools

Letterkenny Town Council is to abandon a proposal to create a “one way triangle” between St Eunan’s College, Scoil Colmcille and St Eunan’s Cathedral.

Officials say a survey carried out over the summer holidays indicated the proposal would not work. However, an alternative proposal to make Cathedral Road one way between Scoil Colmcille and St Eunan’s Cathedral will be assessed before the end of the school year.

There is also the possibility of providing temporary school parking at the site of the old mart, but a decision on the mart’s long term future is not likely until a major consultation process takes place.

Cllr Jimmy Harte raised the issue at a recent council meeting, he says with so many pupils attending schools in that area, it’s vital that the right traffic management decisions are made……..

 

Director expects LYIT dropout rate to fall further

The Director of LYIT says he expects the drop out rate at the college to fall further, as the economic crisis continues to bite.

Traditionally, the institute has had a high drop out rate, close to 40% 10 years ago.

This year, the figure is 25%, still among the highest in the country. Paul Hannigan says the way the figures asre calculated differs from college to college, and that must be addressed.

In this instance, he says, the drop out rate is being affected by employment trends, and he expects more people to stay in college in the coming years……..

 

Night work not an option in Milford – Mc Bride

Business owners and traders in Milford have met with Donegal County Council and the contractor who is to begin improvement works on the town’s main street.

It’s proposed to close part of Main Street for a month, but business leaders in the town are worried that the resultant disruption would damage some businesses beyond repair.

One possible solution that was proposed was nightime working, but the meeting was told this is not an option.

Hanafin promises to defend Derry Dublin air link at cabinet table

Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin has promised to support the retention of EU and government support for the Dublin – Derry air link provided by Aer Arran.

The issue was raised with Minister Hanafin during a visit to Donegal on Friday last.

Local business leaders, including Pramerica CEO Henry Mc Garvey say the Derry Dublin link is hugel;y important to the North West economy, and it should be maintained.

Senator Cecilia Keavney says when she raised it with Minister Hanafin in Donegal, the response she got was very positive……

 

LYIT Director says Donegal retains more graduates than any other rural county

The Director of Letterkenny Institute of Technology says Donegal has a better record in employing its own graduates than any other rural county in Ireland.

Paul Hannigan was speaking after the college was ranked 18th out of 22 third level colleges in the annual Sunday Times Guide, down from 14th in 2009.

The guide finds that with 31% of students not having standard leaving cert qualifications, Letterkenny IT is the most socially inclusive college in the country.

Paul Hannigan says that reflects the efforts being made locally to help people get college qualifications who otherwise would not be able to………..

 

Concern at Milford road closure proposal

Business leaders in Milford are expressing concern at a proposal to close the Main Street to traffic for a month, beginning in October. Long awaited improvement works are getting underway, but it’s feared the disruption the works cause may damage some businesses beyond repair.

The proposal has been flagged in the local press, with next Friday the deadline for objections.

Business people are meeting with local councillors and officials this afternoon to see if an alternative can be found. Nightime working is being proposed as one possible solution.

Speaking on today’s Shaun Doherty Show, Kenneth Bradley of IRDL says while pedestrian access is being provided, he’s concerned for the future of local businesses…………….

 

Letterkenny Town Council examining how best to fund Circular Road lining

Letterkenny Town Council says it plans to line the Circular Road in the town as quickly as possible, but it may be next year before funding is confirmed.

An application has been made for up to €15,000 to carry out the works, with officials confident that funding will be granted when roads funding is announced next January.

In the meantime, the council says it will try to carry out an interim lining project, in light of councillors’ concerns about safety on the road.

Man rescued from Derryveagh Mountains after getting lost in fog

A man has been rescued from the Derryveagh Mountains in West Donegal.

Search crews spent over 12 hours at the weekend looking for the local man in his 40s after he lost his way while walking in the Glenveagh region.

At around 3pm on Saturday afternoon, the man phoned the emergency services when the mountains became shrouded in fog and mist. Several search crews and members of his family, led by the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team, continued searching until he was located before 5am yesterday morning.

A helicopter could not be tasked to help with the search because of the foggy conditions.

When he was located he was described as being cold and tired but otherwise in good health

Rememberance service for road traffic victims to be held in Buncrana

A special interdominational service is to be held in Buncrana in November to remember people who have died in road collisions.

The multi denominational ceremony will take place in Buncrana on 21st November this year as part of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

PARC says Inishowen has seen multiple fatalities this year, the most recent being the worst since records began and they believe it’s vital that community support continue for victims and their families in the aftermath of such traumatic events.

Gardai and the Road Safety Authority have agreed to help organise the event, but Susdan Grey of PARC is particularly anxious that some of the bereaved families become involved. She says she has already spoken to some of them, and the response has been very positive.

Soccer – World Cup Dream For Donegal Girls Comes To An End

The Republic of Ireland women’s U17 side were defeated 2-1 by a strong Japanese side in the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup quarter-final in Trinidad on Friday night. Ireland’s World Cup hopes were dented in the 34th minute when the referee gifted a penalty to Japan as Maomoto duly converted but Ireland hit back in the 53rd minute through Denise O’Sullivan who was in sensational form for the Irish throughout. However, Japan’s top goal scorer, Yokohama was on-hand in the 67th minute to score a marvelous goal to send Japan through to the World Cup semi-final. Kilmacrennan Celtics Ciara Grant started each of the four games in the competition while Finn Valley’s Tanya Kennedy came on late in the Japan game replacing Stacie Donnelly. As Ireland faced the long journey home they came be incredibly proud of their tremendous performance at the World Cup.
