Report highlights success of Donegal Smoking Cessation Service

A report on the Donegal Smoking Cessation Service 2007 – 2009 confirms that people who join the Service are ten times more likely to quit than those who try to quit alone.

The HSE Smoking Cessation Service in Donegal is a free and confidential service available at 14 clinic locations throughout the county.

Every 6.5 seconds someone in the world dies from using tobacco.

Gardai in Donegal are urging people to look out for others in the community, particularly the elderly and other potentially vulnerable people.

It’s part of national Community Safety Week, which was launched by Commissioner Fachtna Murphy at the National Ploughing Championships this week.

Letterkenny based Inspector Pat O’Donnell says it’s a matter of people paying more attention to their own homes and the homes of the people around them:

RNLI says Lough Swilly was Donegal’s busiest lifeboat station during the summer

People are being urged to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they suspect someone may be in difficulty on the water.

The call comes as RNLI statistics published today show that the Lough Swilly Lifeboat was the busiest in Donegal over the summer, with 14 call outs in June July and August.

The Arranmore Lifeboat had 9 call outs and the Bundoran lifeboat had 7.

RNLI Inspector Owen Medland says the figures reflect the fact that most summer call outs are to leisure craft, with stations such as Arranmore busier during the autumn and winter months when more missions involve trawlers and other commercial vessels in the open seas…….

 

Soccer – Coleman Scores His First Everton Goal

Donegal’s Seamus Coleman scored his first goal for  Everton on Tuesday Night but his side failed to progress in the Carling Cup losing to Brentford on penalties. Coleman had put Everton in front after just six minutes from a most unlikely source. Yakubu’s effort was diverted into the path of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and when he teed up  Coleman, the Irishman made no mistake from eight yards.  Brentford equalised in the second half and penalties were needed to seperate the sides. Unfortunatly for Coleman and Everton, The league one side moved to the next round winning 4-3 on spot kicks.

Meanwhile Shay Given is set for his first start of the season at West Brom on Wednesday if he shakes off a toe injury. Man City boss Roberto Mancini is aiming to shuffle his pack with one eye on Saturday’s game against Chelsea, and that includes resting Joe Hart, who he plumped for as his first-choice goalkeeper at the start of the season. Given has also been told he can leave Eastlands in the January transfer window but Mancini has told future buyers that he will not go for a cut price.

Donegal shares 60 million euro social housing investment

60 million euro for the purchase of housing and apartments for special needs groups has been confirmed.

Six housing associations operating in Monaghan, Louth and Donegal have received approval for the acquisition of a total of 40 units.

It is expected that the homes will provide housing for the homeless, older people and people with disabilities.

Police investigate Derry shooting incident

Police in Derry are investigating an incident in which shots were fired outside a house in the Cornshell Fields area of the city last night.

No-one was injured in the incident which occurred after two armed and masked men entered the house looking for a male family member who was not at home.

A PSNI spokesman said, at some stage, shots were fired at a car and trailer parked outside.

Donegal home heating oil prices in line with national average

A new surveys revealed a price gap of up to 70 euro between home heating oil suppliers.

The National Consumer agency telephoned 134 suppliers across the country and found the highest average prices were in Clare, with the lowest in Louth.

The cost of home heating oil in Donegal was in line with the national average with a variance of just 20 euro between the highest and lowest quote for 1,000 litres of home heating oil.

Malin Head hotel plans get the go-ahead

Hotel plans that will give the area a huge tourism push – and create jobs – have been given the go-ahead in Malin Head.

Inishowen Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn says he’s thrilled the plans to transform the Crossroads Inn have been given the green light by the councils planners.

The plans, which include 38 hotel rooms, will comprise of three buildings.

They include the main hotel building which will cater for 20 rooms, a bar and a function room. There will also be a barn block consisting of eight more hotel rooms, a plunge pool, jacuzzi and gym.

9 year old girl attacked by dogs in Derry

A neighbour of the 9 year-old girl who was attacked by two pit bull type dogs in Derry’s Waterside yesterday says laws pertaining to dogs should be more vigorously enforced.

Danielle McAllister suffered bite injuries to her arm in the attack which happened in the driveway of her Gelvin Gardens home shortly before 4.30pm as she was coming home from school.

A number of neighbours came to her rescue after hearing her screams.

One of them, Agnes Webb, outlined her experience on today’s Shaun Doherty Show…..
